Alpine Essentials Course

Alpine Essentials is designed to teach you all the fundamental skills for climbing in the Alps, and will help you become more independent in the mountains.

During this 5 day course we will start with alpine rock climbs and scrambles while we acclimatise, learning appropriate ropework and belaying skills on the way.

The second part of the week we spend in the high glaciated mountains of the Mont Blanc massif, taking in two quality peaks while we learn appropriate crampon, rope and crevasse rescue techniques.

What You'll Need: We use and endorse Sherpa and Black Diamond products because in our experience they are excellent. If necessary it is possible to rent most hardware items in Chamonix, however this is considered a last resort for some items - you should have kit that is suited to you and that you have had time to get familiar with: Ice axe* | Standard steel mountaineering Crampons* | Helmet* | Trekking Poles (optional)* | Insulated B2/B3 Hiking Boots* | 40-50L Rucksack | 1L Metal Waterbottle | Harness (adjustable so that it is comfortable over all your layers), 2 screw gate karabiners, belay device, 1 8-foot sling.* | Sunglasses (cat 4), goggles, sunhat, sunscreen, lip salve/block | 3 sets socks and light coloured thermal tops | Lightweight Goretex hooded top & bottoms | Warm hat, thick gloves (eg ski gloves that are warm and waterproof), thin gloves | Insulating mid-and-outer layers | Windproof Trousers | Lightweight Thermal leggings (long johns) | Personal first aid - blister kit, aspirin, or Paracetamol | Head torch and spare batteries | Lightweight Book/iPod for spare time in huts and earplugs | Sleeping bag liner for huts (you don't need a sleeping bag itself as blankets/duvets are provided) | Cash (euros) for extra drinks / snacks in huts (allow £20 per hut night) | ID | Snack food, teabags, if you have an alpine membership card its worth bringing that too. (*Can be rented.)
Ability Level Requirements: Some experience hiking or in the mountains is beneficial, though not essential. A good head for heights and a reasonable level of preparedness will be expected.
Physical Requirements: The week is very demanding physically, so a fair standard of fitness is recommended.
Instruction/Guiding Details: You will have an instructor or guide with you throughout this course.
Getting There: Airport Transfers can be arranged after booking, and there is parking available for those driving to Chamonix.
